  • A pet ferret named Giuseppe will forecast the weather at the Jessup Groundhog Day event on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. at Station Park. Local organizers plan festivities including after parties (marking the town’s 150th anniversary) to engage the community.  WVIA
  • Calvary Bible Church in Wilkes-Barre will run a Code Blue shelter from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23 through Tuesday, Jan. 27 — with a 9 p.m. start on Wednesday nights. The shelter provides emergency refuge amid dangerous cold weather.  FOX 56

  • New owners will finalize the purchase of Taney's Costume Shop next week on North Washington Avenue. They plan to modernize the century-old store by adding online costume rentals and custom balloon designs (keeping a local legacy alive).  WNEP

  • The Carbon County Coroner's Office warned residents Tuesday night after a death in the Penn Forest area was linked to kratom toxicity (mitragynine), urging users to exercise caution when consuming the supplement.  FOX 56
  • Scranton residents face extra strain on heating systems as a cold front brings single-digit temperatures. Fire officials and heating experts advise keeping space heaters three feet from combustibles and checking air filters to avoid fires and costly repairs (they stress carbon monoxide safety).  FOX 56
