ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews cleared debris from 23 derailed train cars at the Moosic Road Railroad crossing in Old Forge on Tuesday (officials confirmed no hazardous materials or public danger).  FOX 56

BUSINESS NEWS

  • LSEO launched LSEO AI today to help Northeastern Pennsylvania businesses improve online visibility with tools driven by AI search. The software suite offers easy to use features such as AI Visibility Tracking for $50 a month to help companies evolve.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Restaurants in regional counties are competing in a French onion soup contest organized by Cliff Krajkovich of Gravity Restaurant + Bar through February, using QR codes and an online map for diners to vote, with winners receiving People’s and Judge’s Choice honors and a challenge to the lowest vote-getter.  WVIA
  • Jessup launches a new Groundhog Day tradition with a live ferret named Jessup Giuseppe forecasting the weather at 8 a.m. Sunday at Station Park. Local businesses join festivities — adding a lighthearted twist to winter and showcasing community spirit.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UGI Utilities has asked the Public Utility Commission to raise base rates by $99.4 million annually to support pipeline upgrades & critical safety improvements; if approved on March 29, residential bills will see an 8.7% increase while commercial customers face smaller rises, and the review may delay implementation until October.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scranton Heart Institute has agreed to pay $48,709.20 to settle allegations of improper Medicare billing for PET scan services + federal prosecutors stated the disputed billing practices occurred between December 2020 and May 2023.  FOX 56
  • Tenor Health Foundation received state approval Wednesday for its pending acquisition of Moses Taylor, Regional, and Wilkes-Barre General hospitals from Commonwealth Health Systems in Northeast Pennsylvania. The deal (with further steps still pending) aims to keep hospitals open and safeguard local jobs.  WNEP
  • The Wright Center for Community Health in Lackawanna County received a $300,000 grant from the Moses Taylor Foundation to certify 20 peer support specialists who help patients with mental health and addiction challenges+ the program aims to expand community support across Northeastern PA.  FOX 56
