CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Scranton hosted a Lunar New Year festival on Thursday with craft workshops, food, and games that celebrated Asian traditions (including Chinese calligraphy and Japanese origami). Faculty, students, and the Asia Club led friendly competitions and art activities honoring the Year of the Horse.  FOX 56
  • A new mural, Song of the City, will honor Scranton's vaudeville history on the corner of Linden Street and Penn Ave. Artist Jon Laidacker will begin work in his studio in the next few weeks — the mural is set to install by the end of summer and early fall.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State Scranton is sending two senior dancers to join THON, a 46-hour dance marathon fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, as the event starts tonight at 6 p.m. in State College.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT advanced plans for a 140-mile rail corridor linking Scranton and New York Penn Station during a virtual meeting Thursday afternoon. The proposed project includes stops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and will offer three daily round-trips.  WNEP

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two weeks after a fire at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Dickson City, former Throop volunteer David Spalding drove 90 minutes to help fight the blaze, ensuring no serious injuries occurred. The hospital is partially open and will resume orthopedic care + rehabilitation services.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • In an episode from the WVIA Podcast Studio—featuring local insight—Roger and Bob discussed how Scranton native Gerry McNamara and Justice Shoats are leading the Siena University Saints while previewing tonight’s basketball game between Pittston Area and Crestwood along with NASCAR and Penguins hockey.  WVIA
