  • On Friday, DPW workers collecting recycling on Hampton Street stopped a porch fire by shoveling snow with trash cans and waking the family to prevent injuries until firefighters arrived. Mayor Cognetti thanked the crew for their quick response + heroic service.  FOX 56
  • Noelle, a mixed-breed puppy with boundless energy from Griffin Pond Animal Shelter near Clarks Summit, needs an active home to help her thrive. Shelter staff say her playful nature suits families with kids and other dogs.  WNEP

CULTURE NEWS

  • In celebration of Black History Month, local voices recommend books by Black authors that share history & strong stories. Their picks include titles like 'Black Patience' and 'Burn Down Master's House' to help readers explore diverse narratives.  WVIA
  • University of Scranton held its annual Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 17 where Dr. Ann Pang-White led students and faculty in a feast, a chopstick competition and calligraphy session — marking the Year of the Horse with festive traditions.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT has lowered speed limits to 45 mph and limited commercial vehicles to the right lane on I-80, I-81, I-84 and I-380 because of a powerful winter storm. The restrictions remain until conditions improve and updates are provided via traveler systems.  FOX 56
  • On Thursday, transportation leaders detailed plans to revive rail service between Scranton and New York City. The project will run three daily round-trips in about three hours and include a new Scranton station (140-mile corridor) as studies and public meetings continue before a final proposal.  FOX 56

  • On Friday, Feb. 20, Old Forge pizzerias saw a surge in business during the first Friday of Lent as local spots like Bobo’s Pizza and Salerno’s Café extended hours & stocked up to meet doubled orders.  WNEP
