COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Montage Mountain, hundreds will plunge into icy waters — raising funds for the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania this weekend. The event began this morning with the Cool Schools Plunge and public registration for Saturday is open.  WNEP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FedEx will close its Pittston facility at 1000 Sathers Dr. in early May, affecting 63 workers. The company plans to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the state — a measure to aid affected employees — and will offer many impacted workers new roles.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Actors Circle is set to present A Midsummer Night's Dream with a large cast, including dancing fairies and noted stage professionals. The show will run at Providence Playhouse in Scranton from March 12-15 + March 20-22.  The Abington Journal
  • The Marian Sutherland Kirby Library in Mountain Top has resumed its monthly Socrates Cafe meetings where residents join free talks led by participants that use the Socratic method. The sessions occur on the fourth Wednesday each month (facilitated by Stephen Wallace) and aim to boost local civic engagement.  FOX 56
  • The Wyoming County Cultural Center announced an $8,000 grant from the Robert H. Spitz Foundation to support Veterans Connecting: Meetup and Workshop; the monthly program will host a Veterans Fair in May, free movie events, and suicide prevention training for local veterans (including outreach at nursing homes).  The Abington Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rep. Bresnahan and Dr. Oz toured LCCC’s nursing program in Nanticoke on Thursday, where students practiced CPR, ultrasound, and virtual reality checkups (a training tool). They also visited Scranton’s Regional Hospital and learned of new federal funding and upcoming care training launching in spring.  FOX 56
  • State lawmakers, including Reps. Haddock and Pashinski, examined cyber charter school funding at a House Majority Policy Committee hearing at Abington Heights Middle School, stressing that public education must tie funding to measurable outcomes and ensure fair accountability for all students.  The Abington Journal
  • Our Lady of Peace School announced its honor roll for the second quarter of the 2025-26 academic year, recognizing students who earned principal’s lists and high honors across grades 6, 7, and 8.   • Mortgage rates have dropped to 5.98% this week after Freddie Mac reported rates falling below 6% for the first time since September 2022 (a milestone that experts say could boost local home buying in Scranton).  WVIA

  • Today, Roger and Bob hosted a local podcast at WVIA to preview upcoming high school championships. They highlighted the North Pocono vs. Crestwood girls' game and shared comments from Penguins members on the U.S. Men's Hockey Team's gold medal win (local insight).  WVIA
  • Abington Heights wrestlers Brady Full and Mason Whitney earned gold medals with technical falls in the 127 and 133 weight classes at Wilkes-Barre Area High on Feb. 20 and 21; their team finished second while five finalists advanced to Northeast Regionals in Bethlehem.  The Abington Journal
