COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayfield Youth Baseball reported vandalism damaging its concession stand and storage building, forcing the league to earmark $15,000 raised for future projects to repair equipment ahead of its April opening day (volunteers are working to restore the field).  FOX 56

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices nationwide reached about $3.58 a gallon on March 11 as tensions with Iran kept oil markets unstable, affecting fuel costs in our area. Experts warn prices may rise to $4 in the coming days.  WNEP
  • In Northeast Pennsylvania, modern anthracite mining is done above ground as companies extract the coal with heavy machinery and reclaim the land afterwards (restoring natural contours). Anthracite remains vital for steel making and water purification, continuing a legacy that once powered America’s industrial rise.  FOX 56
  • Pennsylvania’s gas prices have risen for 13 consecutive days and hit $3.65 per gallon on March 11 — rising wholesale costs and global supply concerns have driven the climb, which may soon affect local drivers in Scranton.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Johnson College hosted its annual Girls on Fire event to introduce girls in grades six through nine to STEM careers during International Women’s Day week. More than 90 students from local districts attended panel discussions and hands-on workshops in fields like HVAC and carpentry (per college career services).  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility crews are working on Main Street today to update local lines, causing traffic delays in Dickson City. The Dickson City Police Department advises drivers to allow extra time for trips (check local updates for potential detours).  FOX 56
  • Residents gathered at Valley View High School in Archbald for the second conditional use hearing on Cornell Realty Management’s data center campus, questioning water use and backup generator plans. The meeting will resume Monday, Apr. 13 — offering further community input.  WVIA
