COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jim Thomas announced his retirement as CEO of the Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA, effective June 30 (after more than 32 years of leadership that expanded community programs and capital campaigns). His legacy shows in the transformation into a network of four branches and three program sites.  Go Lackawanna
  • At the Caregiver Support Symposium held Tuesday at Misericordia University, Secretary Kavulich presented the PA CareKit, a resource designed to help 2.4 million unpaid caregivers support 3.4 million seniors across Pennsylvania. District Attorney Sanguedolce led discussions on safeguarding elders from scams and abuse.  Go Lackawanna

BUSINESS NEWS

  • PPL Electric Utilities will hold an open house at the Throop Community Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St., on Tuesday, Mar. 31 to explain its planned upgrades for transmission lines and a new substation near a proposed data center campus, with a project team available to answer questions.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scranton School District leaders held a town hall Tuesday night to outline plans to expand the Monticello special education program at the former Friendship House on 1509 Maple St to add eight classrooms for nearly 70 students, with demolition starting late March and a new center opening in August.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brandy Varner broke indoor throwing records for King's College at Nationals and earned All-American honors after overcoming an injury and a change in sports.  WNEP
  • Scranton native Gerry McNamara (a former standout player) was named head coach of Syracuse men's basketball on Tuesday morning. He spent 14 seasons as an assistant and coached Siena before his appointment (effective immediately) to lead the team.  WVIA
  • RailRiders fans will enjoy big upgrades at PNC Field as the team prepares for their home opener on Tuesday, April 7, with a new video board nearly three times larger and menu items like a kielbasa cheesesteak to enhance the game experience.  WNEP
