COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girard Hose Company #1 mourned its beloved mascot Elvis FireDog, who served as a loyal member for 11 years, with firefighters giving him a final ride on Wednesday morning. The team celebrated his role in fire prevention and community outreach.  FOX 56
  • Volunteers distributed 2000 meals during the annual Family to Family Easter Food Basket Giveaway on Wednesday outside the Scranton Cultural Center, partnering (Friends of the Poor and Catherine McAuley Center) to fill bags with essentials like ham and vegetables for residents ahead of Easter.  FOX 56
  • Volunteer fire companies in Luzerne, Carbon, and Schuylkill counties are selling Easter flower baskets — proceeds will fund new fire equipment and training — with sales running at local stations until Saturday. Buyers can visit Valley Regional Fire and Rescue in Drums and other sites for details.  WNEP
  • Easter weekend brings a series of family-friendly egg hunts across the region. In Scranton, the Electric City Aquarium offers a scavenger hunt (with prizes) on Sunday, April 5 at 11 a.m., while neighboring communities host events for children and adults.  WVIA
  • Community members propose moving the decades-old clock tower and 9/11 memorial plaque for Laura DeFazio to the donated pocket park behind the Finish Shop amid a dispute over its current site; the plan will be discussed in an upcoming council meeting (supported by the DeFazio family and local businesses).  WNEP

SPORTS NEWS

  • Olivia Thomas broke three school records in her first varsity meet, running the 100m hurdles in 14.54 seconds (the third best time in conference history) as teammate Natalie Talluto won the 300m hurdles while preparing for West Point. The team will compete next Wednesday, April 8 at Dunmore High School.  WNEP
