COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Union Pacific Railroad Museum will run a scenic rail excursion from Nesquehoning to Pittston on June 14, supporting a fundraiser for railroad preservation and drawing strong interest from train fans in our area.  FOX 56

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ghiagiarelli's reopened Friday in Old Forge after more than nine years of closure, selling out its first-hour pizza batch (it will operate Wednesday through Sunday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.). Locals welcomed the return of a cherished neighborhood eatery.  WNEP

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Good Friday, community members gathered at Saint Peter’s Cathedral to reflect during a liturgy led by Bishop Joseph Bambera; Easter Sunday Mass will be held at 6:30 a.m., 10 a.m., and 12:15 p.m. there.  FOX 56

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mortgage rates have risen over five weeks, with the 30-year fixed rate now at 6.46% (Freddie Mac data), a trend that may slow the spring homebuying season for Scranton buyers as inflation pressures from the war in Iran take effect.  FOX 56
  • Local farmers face a tough growing season as fertilizer and fuel costs have soared due to global supply disruptions. The price for fertilizer has doubled to about $800 and rising fuel costs are straining their budgets in this challenging market.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Syracuse University held an emotional ceremony Monday for new men's basketball coach Gerry McNamara, a Scranton native, with over 3,000 fans and alumni present to celebrate his appointment. A related ceremony Tuesday honored the University of Scranton’s Lady Royals after their historic season.  FOX 56
