Good morning, Scranton. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday evening at The Recovery Bank (120 Wyoming Avenue), local residents gathered for a free cooking class that taught budget-friendly meals and built connections among those in recovery. Organizer Jennifer Coleman said the center holds monthly sessions to support newcomers facing food insecurity.  FOX 56
  • Vietnam veteran Walter Roos of Lakeville received five awards at a ceremony at American Legion Post 311 in Hawley today. He served from 1967 to 1972 and said he was most proud of the Vietnam Service Medal (which honors his commitment during a challenging time).  WNEP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Heavy spring rains have troubled a local Christmas tree farm near Tunkhannock as Veto Barziloski fertilizes and plants new trees while managing risks of insect and fungus damage on sensitive Fraser Firs — his careful adjustments may not fully counter excess water that could harm this year’s crop.  WNEP

CULTURE NEWS

  • Valley Community Library held a teen Zine Zone event on Monday devoted to poetry and National Poetry Month; participants built handmade zines from repurposed magazines and scrap paper (their designs need not be perfect) and future sessions are planned through summer.  FOX 56

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hummingbirds are returning to Pennsylvania this spring as males arrive early to claim feeding spots and set up territories. Wildlife experts advise residents to help the tiny birds refuel by putting out feeders or planting native flowers (like bee balm).  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Organizers of Stop Archbald Data Centers held a public forum Monday at Valley Community Library to explain borough zoning rules for proposed data centers and answer residents’ questions. They detailed projects under the 2023 ordinance and 2025 amendment and shared info on upcoming hearings & fundraising.  FOX 56
