CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Scranton unveiled a restored 16th-century Italian Renaissance painting during a Thursday ceremony at Weinberg Memorial Library after conservators uncovered a hidden infant Saint John the Baptist, and the art gifted by the Morgan family now is the oldest piece on display.  FOX 56
  • Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla ended a four-day state visit in NEPA that impressed residents and local officials. The Valley Community Library will host its Books Appétit fundraiser on May 7 in Peckville with music, food and raffle prizes.  WVIA
  • Lake Wallenpaupack celebrates its 100th season with two local businesses launching tiki boat tours from Silver Birches Resort in Tafton this weekend — rides accommodate up to 30 people and run through Labor Day.  WNEP

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At the Northeast PA RV show in the parking lot of PNC Field at Moosic, buyers are watching rising gas prices that jumped from $4.39 to $4.45 in a day. They now consider fuel-efficient trailers to help lower travel costs.  WNEP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State officials, educators, and literacy advocates met in Scranton last Friday to address concerns over the literacy crisis, as a new report showed Scranton School District’s structured reading program making progress despite challenges. Officials stressed more support and funding to boost literacy.  FOX 56

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced more than $1 million in grants for 46 environmental education projects in northeastern counties including Lackawanna, Bradford, Luzerne, and Wayne. The funds will support summer camps, watershed research, outdoor classes, and community workshops for underserved residents.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Shapiro's office and the PA Office of Transformation and Opportunity terminated Project Gravity's participation in the Fast Track Program on May 1 due to delays and a lack of transparency — the data center campus in Archbald, expected to receive a $5 billion investment, now awaits local zoning approval.  WVIA
  • Homeowners in Pennsylvania can now cancel home improvement contracts within three business days by giving verbal notice, the Supreme Court ruled. The decision upholds consumer rights (including phone or in-person cancellations) under state law.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lackawanna County and Pennsylvania’s DEP will run mosquito traps powered by batteries and dry ice from April through Oct. to watch for West Nile virus — technicians collect them within 24 hours, and residents are urged to remove standing water.  The Abington Journal

  • A 13-year-old cat named Eugene, found as a stray in Jessup last fall, is now ready for adoption through NEPA Pet Fund + Rescue. Officials say the gentle cat needs a home where someone is around to provide care and attention.  WNEP

  • Keystone College baseball coach Jamie Shevchik reached his 800th win after the team staged a 10-run comeback in their playoff game on Friday at the college field. The milestone highlighted strong team effort and marked a significant turning point in the season.  WVIA
