- ➤ On April 6, Clarks Summit paramedics delivered baby Florence Smith when the call came in early and she arrived unexpectedly en route to the hospital, and six weeks later they met the family at the fire company to mark paramedic Patrick Golden's first in-field birth. WNEP
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ King’s College held its 77th commencement ceremony today at Mohegan Arena where over 400 students earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The event marked the debut of a new Master of Arts program in Strategic Communications and celebrated its first graduate with a focus on genetic counseling. FOX 56
- ➤ Governor Shapiro signed Act 17 of 2026 that requires every public and private school to have AEDs at all athletic practices and events and to develop emergency response plans, with mandatory CPR and AED training for staff beginning in 2029 (the law honors Monroe County teen Greg Moyer). FOX 56
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scranton tested its emergency levee closures and flood warning sirens Friday to prepare for flood season. Public works teams temporarily closed flood gates around five bridges on the Lackawanna River (Parker Street, Sanderson Avenue, Albright Avenue, Poplar Street and Olive Street) to practice readiness. - ➤ Archbald Borough Council held a four-hour hearing on the Wildcat Ridge data center proposal — residents questioned the noise study methods and diesel generator impact. The developer offered a $17 million community benefit agreement, and the hearing will continue until June 15 at Valley View High School. WVIA

- ➤ Outreach coordinator Victoria Toomey and local experts share book recommendations for Mental Health Awareness Month to help readers understand mental health struggles. Suggestions include John Green’s 'Turtles All the Way Down,' debut poetry 'Starving for Color,' and Ned Vizzini’s 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' (each inspiring empathy). WVIA
- ➤ Straus Family Creamery issued a recall on Thursday for several ice cream flavors sold in 17 states, including Pennsylvania, after metal fragments were detected. Consumers are advised to discard affected quart and pint sizes (vanilla, strawberry, cookie dough, Dutch chocolate, and mint chip) and contact the company for support. WNEP
- ➤ The Wright Center is using a van as a mobile exam room to provide street medicine to homeless individuals in Scranton. Operating twice a month since January, the service offers physicals, prescriptions & blood pressure checks, reaching more than a third of the 216 people living on the streets. WNEP

- ➤ Maggie is a 5-year-old beagle/bulldog mix (with a spine injury) who has been cared for at Friends with Paws Pet Rescue in Scranton since October. Rescue workers say she needs a home where she gets regular attention and is the only pet, with older children if present. WNEP
