COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cyclists will ride 85 miles along long-distance trails from Ararat to Berwick in the NEPA Ecotour on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, with the distance split over two days. The event offers a scenic way to explore local routes.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A student from Abington Heights High School placed third in the American Legion National High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest this weekend, earning a $20,000 college scholarship while competing with top speakers from across the country.  FOX 56
  • Jacob Layland, a senior at Scranton Prep (recognized nationwide), won a national photography contest from over 335,000 entries with his photo titled Jewelry Store taken on a school trip. His work will be exhibited this summer at Carnegie Hall, echoing an honor earned by Andy Warhol.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Dallas Township opposed a proposed housing center for minors and young adults at a zoning hearing after developers (2860 Route 309 LLC) requested a variance. The meeting, rescheduled from late April, will continue on June 15 and no decision has been made.  WNEP

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents at Frances Slocum State Park near Dallas are urged to follow water safety guidelines after a 16-year-old drowned at Francis E. Walter Dam near White Haven on Sunday, with park manager Kevin Koflanovich advising the use of life jackets and caution when in restricted areas (water hazards can be unpredictable).  WNEP

SPORTS NEWS

  • Abington Heights beat Crestwood 19-6 as Gavin Anders scored his 200th goal and Scranton Prep beat Wyoming Seminary 14-5 in the District II boys lacrosse semifinals; the winners will meet on Thursday for the championship.  WNEP
