Scranton city officials awarded $100,000 in grants on Monday to eight local veterans organizations after reviewing applications from April as part of the city’s 2025 operating budget, with funds supporting essential services including transportation, housing, facility upgrades and mental health counseling.
🎓 Education
Over 725 students became alumni of the University of Scranton today as the graduation ceremony celebrated the benefits of a Jesuit education with a message from student speaker Sophia Termini and remarks from future doctor Alex Shomali.
Father Joseph Marina noted the duty to share learned values and even his dog Gracie made a memorable appearance — adding an unexpected light moment to the event.
🏛️ Government
Pennsylvania Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich cut the ribbon at Scranton’s new Older Adult Advocacy Center—located at Telespond Senior Services and set to be fully operational by the end of May—to help older adults facing abuse or neglect.
The center will offer transitional housing and other vital services for older adults from several counties.
