ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Earth Conservancy was awarded a $6.7 million AMLER grant from the PA Department of Environmental Protection to transform its Hanover 7A site — a former strip mine — into a community park with fields, a walking trail, and an inclusive playground. Work will include bulk earthwork, grading, and utility installation to create a new recreation hub for the Lower South Valley.  Go Lackawanna

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Standard and Poor’s downgraded Lackawanna County’s credit rating from BBB to BBB- (affecting $12.025 million in general obligation bonds) while upgrading its outlook from negative to stable. The move reflected ongoing budget issues, including a $37 million deficit, though county reforms (such as a 33% property tax increase) are expected to help balance the budget in the future.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders hosted a memorable Little League Night at PNC Field where young athletes from Abington School District enjoyed a pre-game parade, on-field recognition, and the chance to throw ceremonial first pitches — many experienced the game closely with the pros.  FOX 56
  • At Shippensburg University on May 23 and 24, the Abington Heights Unified track and field team made its first state championship appearance and finished seventh out of nine teams with 39 points—Danny Dolcetti won Division 6 long jump and placed second in the 400 meters.  The Abington Journal
