COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local shelters in Northeast Pennsylvania are overwhelmed by record surrenders, cruelty cases and medical emergencies as rising vet costs push owners to give up their pets, with shelters like Blue Chip and Griffin Pond operating at or above capacity. Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Dalton plans pop-up clinics to offer low-cost care — a measure that may help families keep pets — while local advocates push for stronger animal cruelty laws.  WVIA
  • Keystone Mission closed its downtown Scranton branch unexpectedly, leaving service users shocked and without clear next steps. Executive Director Justin Behrens said the group will relocate those affected within the next few weeks + will keep the Transformation Center open in Wilkes-Barre.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scranton officials said the McDade Park pool will be closed for repairs after leaks were found. The county will seek contractor bids, file a claim against a $300,000 maintenance bond, and reassign lifeguards — the splashpad will remain open for the season.  FOX 56
  • Lackawanna County Prison Warden Tim Betti rescinded his resignation at Wednesday’s board meeting and said he will continue in his role. County President Judge James Gibbons announced the decision, ended the search for a new warden, and named Judge Michael Barrasse to the board.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • MFHS, which has served northeast Pennsylvania for over 50 years, received only 46% of its usual Title X funding this year—jeopardizing access to essential reproductive health services. The organization said it now faces financial challenges in its ongoing federal project that supports low-income and uninsured patients.  FOX 56
