- ➤ On Thursday, Scranton residents celebrated Juneteenth at the Black Scranton Project's Center for Arts and Culture with roller skating and music (including a DJ). Glynis Johns (CEO of the Black Scranton Project) said she hopes the celebration will grow into one of the city's major events. WVIA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Scranton man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after running over a Schuylkill County mechanic in West Penn Township and received an 11 and a half to 23-month prison sentence — his theft of services charge resulted in one year of probation. FOX 56
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Everhart Museum hosted Flower Power Happy Hour Friday to kick off Nay Aug Park’s Electric City Flower Show weekend— visitors enjoyed live music, drinks on the grass, and looked at new art in the museum. The museum will let people in for free tomorrow when the Flower Show opens across the park. FOX 56
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Advocates with the Pennsylvania Literacy Coalition said only about one-third of the state's fourth graders are reading proficiently and called on lawmakers to boost teacher training and start early literacy screening. They urged a $100 million investment in early literacy — with state budget talks stalled as the June 30 deadline nears. WVIA
- ➤ Almost 700 international students studied at local colleges last year, boosting the region’s economy and adding diverse ideas to classrooms. Federal policy changes have created uncertainty for local schools—one University of Scranton student had a visa revoked this spring. WVIA
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lackawanna River Basin Sewer Authority in Throop is testing for PFAS (forever chemicals) in the wastewater from 17 municipalities as a proactive step while current levels remain low. The authority will work with the DEP and the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Foundation to prepare for future regulations. WVIA

- ➤ Lackawanna County mailed the final property assessments for 102,685 parcels, finishing its first full reassessment since 1968. The appeal period began June 20 and will end at 4 p.m. August 1, with hearings scheduled from August 4 to October 31 and final values set to be released November 14. FOX 56
