COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twenty-year-old Eddie Kaufman — known for his skills in baseball and golf — is fighting T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia as local supporters held a fundraiser at Montage Mountain to help with his medical and travel costs. The event featured raffle baskets, silent auctions and a cornhole tournament as part of a growing wave of community support.  FOX 56
  • Firefighters from Taylor Fire and Rescue hosted a strongman competition to raise funds and boost volunteer sign-ups. Competitors took on tasks such as the fire truck pull—where one competitor nearly pulled 40,000 pounds—adding to the challenge and fun of the event.  FOX 56
  • Pharaoh's Car Club Scranton Chapter hosted its first Cars and Coffee event at Scranton Lace Village on Saturday+ the event took place during a break from weeks of heavy rain and organizers said they plan more events soon+.  WNEP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendents in rural Northeast Pennsylvania fear program cuts and layoffs as new state funds favor historically underfunded districts—leaders have formed a coalition and met with lawmakers to call for changes to the funding formula and cyber charter reform.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials said that SNAP has helped nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians by providing food for families and support for local farmers, while federal proposals may soon cut aid and cost the state more than $1 billion—officials warned that changes could leave vulnerable groups at risk. Lawmakers introduced the SAFE Cities Act to support communities that back law enforcement and offered a bipartisan resolution condemning rising antisemitic violence—both measures are now under review.  Go Lackawanna

  • CDC data shows this tick season may be severe as experts (including local health officials) advise checking for ticks to lower the risk of Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis.  WVIA
