COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fireworks will soon light the night sky across Pennsylvania—schedules range from 6/28 to mid-July for July 4th celebrations. In Scranton, fireworks will be displayed on 7/3 at Courthouse Square at 10:00 PM—local residents should check for any updates.  WNEP

CULTURE NEWS

  • Filming is underway in Scranton for the horror film Final Act that uses historic sites (Ritz Theater, Brooks Coal Mine, Electric City Trolley Museum) and features known and rising actors (including Chef Von). The film will complete shooting in a couple of weeks and then spend nearly a year in editing and marketing before its premiere.  FOX 56

  • Only about one third of fourth graders in Pennsylvania were proficient in reading, according to the latest federal numbers—advocates urge state lawmakers to address the literacy crisis.  WVIA

  • At Pocono Raceway on June 22, Gov. Josh Shapiro said he will continue discussions with NFL team owners about stadium needs while warning that tight budgets make state funding unlikely — he noted ongoing talks about adding NASCAR events, including a potential race in Philadelphia. He also praised the sellout NASCAR weekend and highlighted that major sports events like the NFL draft and All-Star Game are planned for next year.  FOX 56
