- ➤ Scranton officials cut the ribbon today on the new Weston Field pool complex — a $3.6 million facility on Providence Road that features a zero-entry pool, splash pad, outdoor showers and a kid-friendly slide. It was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. FOX 56
- ➤ The Hunger Free Summer Campaign kicked off at Gerrity’s in Clarks Summit as 28/22 News anchor Nick Toma collected donations to help feed underprivileged children in the area plus United Neighborhood Centers will use the funds to support its food pantry at 410 Olive Street in Scranton. Julie Dunphy will join the event at Gerrity’s in the Keyser Oak Shopping center on July 2 so locals can continue to donate at Gerrity’s Fresh Grocer and Ace Hardware through July. PA Homepage

- ➤ The Senate confirmed Jessica Shirley as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection via a bipartisan vote. Shirley, who has worked at DEP for 14 years, will lead efforts to protect clean air and water and streamline permitting processes — she succeeds Rich Negrin, who resigned in December. PA Homepage
- ➤ Residents in Scranton will combine cardboard and paper recycling starting the week of July 7 following the City Council’s approval of a new five-year recycling contract with Waste Management. Beginning the week of July 14, comingled pickups for plastics, glass, and metal (including #5 plastics) will occur on a biweekly schedule (from a June 24 meeting). WNEP
