COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SERVE Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is hosting a two-day event showcasing 65 community projects to help local residents — hundreds of volunteers from the region, including 250 from out of town, are working on projects such as planting gardens to support those in need.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rural school districts in Pennsylvania have warned that low state funding may force them to cut programs—smaller districts like Northwest Area School District face only a $31,510 increase compared to much higher gains for larger areas like Scranton. Superintendents are urging lawmakers to explore alternative funding formulas and reforms to ease these cuts.  WVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lackawanna County Conservation District is inviting local landowners to join a new meadow project that will transform lawns and farmland into native plant habitats—boosting soil health and pollinator support. The project is backed by a $294,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection—building on earlier efforts to reduce pollution and improve water quality.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Senate passed H.B. 1431 to repeal blue laws that are over 100 years old and allow hunters to hunt on Sundays all year—giving the Pennsylvania Game Commission authority over wildlife. The bill now goes to the House for final review before Governor Shapiro may sign it into law.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bob Melville was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Cancer in May and had his kidney removed, leaving him with a long recovery ahead. The V Spot Bar in Scranton will host a fundraiser on Sunday, June 29th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.—friends and family plan to help cover his mounting medical bills.  WNEP
  • State Rep. Kosierowski said Friday that Scranton's Regional Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital will stay open as Geisinger—The Wright Center—and Tenor Health lead the bid for new ownership, with a change expected by mid-July.  WVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Middle Atlantic Conference announced that Marywood University will join as its 18th full-time member in the 2026-2027 academic year—strengthening NCAA Division 3 sports in the region—officials said.  FOX 56
  • Lackawanna College announced it will move from the NJCAA to NCAA Division II, adding more sports to its downtown campus and becoming the first Division II program in Lackawanna or Luzerne counties — the change is expected to boost local college athletics.  WVIA
