  • Volunteers from Christmas Miracles from Heaven spruced up Washburn Street Cemetery in Scranton on Saturday by trimming weeds, mowing grass, and removing debris—reviving a site that had been neglected for nearly 10 years—so families can now visit the graves of their loved ones.  PA Homepage

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bedroom fire started in a home on the 500 block of Gaughan Court in Archbald Saturday afternoon when the family noticed smoke just after 1:30 p.m., and police and firefighters quickly controlled the blaze in about ten minutes, rescuing two cats while the house suffered minor smoke and water damage.  PA Homepage

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two local churches in Lackawanna County merged during a mass celebration that formed a new parish named for Blessed Carlo Acutis (honoring the teen who will be made a saint on September 7). Parish leaders said the new parish (which will host special masses and social events soon) plans to build a closer community.  PA Homepage
  • On Saturday, the Bullard #2 locomotive was unveiled at Steamtown National Historic Site in Electric City after being offline since 2010, and it underwent nine years of cosmetic restoration by roughly 100 volunteers + who contributed thousands of hours. Steamtown will continue work on three passenger coaches + as part of ongoing projects to preserve local rail history.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rosemary Boland retired last week after 56 years in the district as she ended her role as president of the Scranton Federation of Teachers, having led strikes and fought for better work conditions. The 78-year-old teacher raised her voice for union rights — her decades of service helped shape local education.  WVIA
