COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McDade Park’s new splash pad closed for a second day on Monday due to a broken pump—leaving many families disappointed amid the summer heat. Officials say repairs will be completed soon—allowing the pad to open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  FOX 56
  • Jason Thomas in Clarks Summit bought 75 backpacks filled with school supplies to donate to kids as the school year nears—his Facebook post received about 400 likes and many comments. He hopes even a small donation can boost a child's confidence and urges others to wait for clearance sales to prepare for the next school year.  FOX 56

CRIME NEWS

  • Scranton police responded to a report of a stabbing on the 400 block of Penn Avenue around midnight Monday morning and found a man injured at St. Francis Commons plus he was taken to the hospital, with initial reports indicating the incident was isolated.  PA Homepage
  • Police investigated a stabbing on Pittston Avenue Sunday night when they responded at about 9:50 p.m. and found a man with a stab wound to his groin who was taken to the hospital for surgery and is now in stable condition (authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward).  PA Homepage
  • Scranton Police reported that a man was taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center after a stabbing just after midnight on Monday on the 400 block of Penn Avenue in north Scranton—authorities say the incident was isolated.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Valley Community Library in Peckville, young residents joined its second annual Squishmallow art session on Monday as they paper-sculpted characters using scrap paper and glue. Fawn Contreras (Head of Youth Services) said the event boosted creative expression (and storytelling) for the children.  FOX 56
  • Spada Kai Historical Fencing in Peckville offers free introductory classes and ongoing training at the Blakely Borough Recreation Complex—meetings run on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and sparring sessions on Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., where participants learn Historical European Martial Arts and practice safe, regulated combat.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rosemary Boland retired last week after 56 years at the Scranton School District — she led the Scranton Federation of Teachers for over 20 years and played a key role in local education.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials are warning Scranton residents to take steps to prevent Lyme disease and tick bites as summer continues. The department reported 16,620 lab-confirmed cases last year (placing the state among the top ten) and advises wearing light-colored clothing, using proper insect repellent and checking for ticks.  FOX 56
