  • County officials hosted water safety lessons at Merli Sarnoski Park near Carbondale today to help residents prepare for summer — lifeguards offered swimming lessons while Wild Wellness NEPA taught boating safety classes.  WNEP
  • Church volunteers in Mocanaqua are preparing thousands of homemade pierogies for St. Mary’s Church Homecoming Picnic on August 30 and 31—using farmer’s cheese, eggs, and chives to keep a long-standing local tradition alive that was recognized in 1999.  PA Homepage
  • On August 2nd at 6 p.m. at Marywood University’s Nazareth Hall, a benefit event will raise funds to cover medical care and living expenses for more than 70 retired IHM Sisters from Our Lady of Peace in Dunmore—women who dedicated their lives to helping others.   • PS Bank turned its parking lot near Clarks Summit into a drive-through that provided 10 free cases of water and snacks to 11 local fire departments to help firefighters stay hydrated during long, heated shifts — officials noted this support aids crew recovery.  WNEP

  • Hillside Farms in Luzerne County received a USDA grant to upgrade its aging dairy machinery. The farm, which processes more than 300 gallons of milk daily, will use the funds to buy a refurbished separator costing over $70,000 — a move to sustain its long-standing methods.  WNEP

CRIME NEWS

  • Barshawn Campbell, 29, from Scranton was charged after police say he made gun threats at a Sheetz parking lot in Taylor on July 7 at 6:30 p.m.—surveillance video showed him with a black firearm in his car during a road rage incident.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Scranton School District has paused plans to close schools as Superintendent Erin Keating cited steady overall enrollment and a rising number of students with autism, expecting about 9,300 students this fall. School board member Sean McAndrew said the move will help avoid reopening schools later—district officials will review trends before making any further decisions.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Geisinger opened a new 61,000-square-foot cancer center in Dickson City on June 23 after nearly three years of construction costing almost $60 million—patients in Lackawanna now have closer access to cancer care rather than traveling to Luzerne County.  WVIA
