COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Comcast donated 35 new laptops and $35,000 to Outreach — a Scranton nonprofit that helps residents overcome barriers to employment — on Wednesday, July 9. The donation will help community members improve digital skills for job searches and accessing online resources.  WVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • State police in Wyoming County are searching for 32-year-old Tiffany Sherbondy of Tunkhannock after she was last seen on July 1 at 10:00 a.m. near the 2400 block of State Route 6 in Factoryville—she is 5 ft 5 in, 110 lbs, with brown hair and hazel eyes and may have ties to Wayne and Lackawanna Counties.  PA Homepage
  • Duryea police are looking for a suspect after vehicles were broken into overnight on Spring—Hope, Church, and Main Streets near Avoca, and they described the suspect as a man driving a sedan.  PA Homepage

  • South Abington Township is hosting the free Lakeside Summer Concert Series at Hillside Park, where local bands will play live music every Wednesday from June 18 until August 20 — guests can enjoy scenic views and a mix of folk, blues, acoustic and more.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City council deadlocked on extending downtown Scranton parking hours and left Saturday metered parking off while warning that a default risk remains—Council President Gerald Smurl said negotiations with bondholders continue and a vote on parking rate increases is expected next Tuesday.  FOX 56
  • Governor Shapiro signed House Bill 1431 on July 9 to repeal Pennsylvania's Sunday hunting ban—changes will take effect in 60 days to allow an expanded deer season as farmers now support the move to curb crop damage.  WNEP
  • Former executive director Justin Behrens stepped down from Keystone Mission as it closed its Scranton center and planned to shut the Wilkes-Barre facility—Luzerne County is investigating the mission's use of ARPA funds and will sue once the review is complete.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community organizations in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties have invested millions since April to help keep Community Health Systems’ Scranton hospitals open as officials work to find a new buyer — the funds support hospital payroll and staff after a proposed deal fell through last November. Local leaders say the contributions are critical for maintaining services until a long-term solution is reached.  WVIA
