  • Bill Gibson, a retired Navy rescue swimmer from Mountain Top, now teaches military members how to survive sea rescues. He credits his father and the Navy for his work ethic—skills that helped him save lives and guide new rescue swimmers while staying active in local Crestwood High School reunions.  PA Homepage

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men accused in the 2024 shooting of a Scranton police officer will stand trial together in October in Lackawanna County after Judge Michael Barrasse ruled against moving the trial to another county—he said there was not enough evidence of prejudicial publicity to separate the cases.  WVIA
  • Scranton police arrested Bobbie Pinko and Jesus Matias Merrero on Monday after a man was stabbed in the neck multiple times at the 700 block of Capouse Avenue—Pinko faces conspiracy to commit aggravated assault while Merrero faces several charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with preliminary hearings set for July 22.  PA Homepage

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nickel Plate 190 locomotive roared back onto the tracks at Steamtown National Historic Site on Friday, drawing rail fans as it marked its first run since the 1970s. The engine—restored over 25 years with new trucks and a rebuilt frame—is now on display to celebrate Scranton’s storied rail legacy.  WNEP
  • Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are touring Northeast Pennsylvania until July 23 and began their visit on Wednesday by creating a crushed-marble mandala at Heartspace Yoga and Meditation in Scranton; they offer healing rituals, lectures and blessings to encourage reflection on life’s impermanence (the mandala will be dismantled on Sunday after about 400 hours of work).  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, advocates and residents gathered outside Wilkes-Barre City Hall to protest the closure of Keystone Mission shelters in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre—urging lawmakers to address a growing housing crisis where affordable options are dwindling. Luzerne County is set to sue the nonprofit to recover COVID relief funds as pressure mounts to support the homeless.  FOX 56
  • An intermittent 911 outage—affecting several counties has led officials to advise residents to call their local fire or police departments instead of 911; authorities have not yet determined the cause and recommend checking local websites for updates.  WNEP
