CRIME NEWS

  • A Weatherly couple were indicted on 59 counts—conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud and money laundering—for allegedly defrauding a 93-year-old and an estate of about $1 million between October 2022 and May 2023—federal prosecutors say they used the funds for personal expenses.  FOX 56
  • The Pennsylvania State Police warned Scranton residents about a phone scam where callers impersonate a State Police Troop Captain—falsely claiming violations of Megan’s Law or missed court dates and advising people not to share personal or financial information.  FOX 56
  • A Scranton man was arrested by the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office for possession of child pornography after detectives received a tip from Imgur regarding his Comcast cable account on Cedar Avenue—authorities seized evidence including a photo album labeled 'Paul's Love Obsession' and a digital photo frame with over 150,000 files.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Atmosfere Music Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Ritz Theater on Wyoming Avenue in Scranton — 19 hip-hop and R&B acts including headliner Relic Rhymes will perform until midnight. The festival founders built the event to promote positive rap messages — and they will feature both local and out-of-town talent.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The United Way and WNEP School Supply Fundraiser will collect monetary donations from July 21 to August 11 to provide essential supplies and support services—like nutritious meals and mental health resources—to local students. Donations will be tracked and given to school programs so students can be better prepared for the upcoming school year.  WNEP
