Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 22nd of July.
Good morning, Scranton.
🏘️ Community
Kindness in Chaos NEPA is collecting school supplies through Friday for high school students at NEPA Youth Shelter in Scranton.
Donations can be dropped off at multiple locations (Get Flexy, Sardoni Art Gallery, and others) to help students start the school year prepared.
🎭 Culture
Street Art Society of NEPA launched its 2026 Mural Tour Monday offering guided family night tours through murals across the valley.
The tour begins at the Visit Luzerne County building in Wilkes-Barre and includes games and trivia, with a VIP stop at the organization’s headquarters to fund future local art.
🎓 Education
Wyoming Seminary in Kingston eliminated 22 staff positions this week due to a financial shortfall caused by rising operating costs + declining enrollment.
The school said the move protects students' educational experiences as it plans revenue and program enhancements for the coming 2026-27 school year.
🏛️ Government
Transportation officials announced lane restrictions for I-81 North in Lackawanna County today (to facilitate road work), so drivers should expect potential delays.
Representatives for Essential Energy presented a 92-page safety report at a conditional use hearing in Archbald for a 400-megawatt natural gas power plant on a 15-acre site (adjacent to Staback Park and near a proposed data center).
The hearing will resume Tuesday, Aug. 18.
