  • Workers at Green Ridge News Mini Mart and Grill in Scranton prepared over 3,000 Texas wieners for their $1.50 special this week—donating $1 from each sale to St. Joseph’s Center in honor of owner Kathy Colosimo's late mother.  WNEP

CRIME NEWS

  • Scranton police are searching for 14-year-old Llyon Lushedski — who was last seen on July 23 in the 1900 block of Price Street — and anyone with information is urged to call Detective Dunn at 5703484134.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Private beekeeper Sonny Kierzkowski donated six frames of bees — about 5,000 to 10,000 bees — to Keystone College on July 23 after up to 15,000 bees were reportedly stolen last week, and college staff are reviewing footage and planning extra safety measures at the apiary.  WVIA
  • Seventh and eighth graders welded dinosaur models at the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Thursday as part of the Weld-A-Saurus camp that teaches trade skills. An adult welding class is scheduled for the first week of August—interest was high as the class filled on the first day and a waiting list formed.  PA Homepage

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials from Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitation reported a rise in sick, starving and injured bats in our area this year due to white nose syndrome, deforestation, windmills and pesticides. They warned that if bat numbers drop further, farmers may have to use more toxic chemicals—residents should call local wildlife rehab if they see a bat at home.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, WVIA President and CEO Carla McCabe said the station lost 20% of its operating budget when Congress cut funding on July 1 and that tough changes in programming and operations are ahead. She noted that the station will soon ask local supporters for help — a step that reflects the broader ripple effect of the cut.  WVIA

  • Mosquito samples collected on July 14 from North Garfield Avenue and Bulwer Street in Scranton’s Tripp Park and near Hudson Street in Jessup tested positive for West Nile virus—though no human cases were reported, county officials said.  FOX 56
