COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A section of the Lake Scranton walking path from the stone bridge to the dam near the fishing pier will be closed starting July 28 and continuing through the end of September—Pennsylvania American Water said. The closure is a safety measure prompted by increased truck traffic during maintenance work.  PA Homepage
  • Mr. Monkey Pants is a quirky cat rescued from a hoarding situation at St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo in Scranton and is now available for adoption. Rescue workers say he is estimated to be 3 to 5 years old (he shows a bright personality and is recovering from a minor allergic reaction) and gets along well with other cats.  WNEP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Schiff’s Marketplace reopened Thursday after an electrical fire forced a week-long closure—local officials say the store is now ready to welcome customers. A grand reopening ceremony is set for Wednesday, July 30 at 9 a.m. to mark its return.  PA Homepage

CRIME NEWS

  • Last week, after up to 15,000 bees were stolen from Keystone College, private beekeeper Sonny Kierzkowski (member of the Lackawanna Backyard Beekeepers) donated six frames holding about 5,000 to 10,000 bees to help replace the lost colony.  WVIA
  • Scranton police charged Heather Bogaski after her pit bull killed a Chihuahua and attacked several people, with the dog escaping through a broken fence on July 12—Bogaski now faces confinement and control charges and must vaccinate the animal against rabies after a second incident on July 16.  PA Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longtime restaurant owner Nasario Damian Contreras was detained by ICE last week outside his Moscow-area business after a paperwork lapse changed his immigration status. Immigration attorneys say he now faces removal proceedings and steep legal fees + the community watches closely as his fight for freedom continues.  WNEP
  • Beginning Monday, a preservation project using the cape seal process will take place on Route 11 near Scranton and South Abington Township—drivers should expect detours and delays until work wraps up on August 6.  PA Homepage
