CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Superior Court of Pennsylvania overturned a verdict in a fatal wrong-way crash in Carbon County that killed Scranton resident Paul Gerrity in 2018 after a DUI by Joseph Persico and ruled that a hospital blood draw violated his Fourth Amendment rights—sending the case back to the common pleas court. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A state budget stalemate and a federal funding freeze have forced school leaders in Scranton to plan for tax hikes, cuts in programs, and short-term loans, with the district (the largest in Lackawanna County) having about $1.2 million in federal funds frozen. The school board approved a $239 million preliminary 2026 budget that did not raise taxes but may change if state or federal funding falls short. WVIA

- ➤ Advocates and local officials met on Thursday at the Electric City Trolley Museum to mark 35 years of progress under the ADA and to demand more funding for accessible transit and public facilities—concerns include potential Medicaid and state spending cuts. They stressed that while improvements have been made, more work is needed to remove barriers for disabled residents in Lackawanna County. WVIA
- ➤ The county closed the deadline on Friday for property owners to appeal new assessments with about 4,200 appeals filed from roughly 103,000 properties, and appeals mailed with an August 1 postmark will count. Starting Monday at 10 a.m., five appeals boards in the Marketplace at Steamtown in Scranton will review cases five days a week until October 31, with final property values delivered on November 14 for tax millage rates.
