COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Scranton Area Community Foundation awarded $5,000 to Camp Create so that children with special needs paid only $25 per week or could attend free with a full scholarship during last summer's camp. The camp will hold its 25th season at the Church of the Epiphany (Session 1 Aug. 4 to 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and (Session 2 Aug. 11 to 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) this summer.  The Abington Journal
  • Kids and seniors met Monday for the first Pen Pal Day hosted by United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania — the event helped build new friendships after a year of planning. Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific plan to merge — rail historians in Altoona watched the deal with high hopes as regulators decide on its approval.  WVIA

  • Former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey joined the University of Scranton as a Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service on Tuesday. He will mentor students and advise campus programs — drawing on his 18 years in the Senate — to share his real-world view of ethical government.  Go Lackawanna
  • WNEP and United Way are partnering on a back-to-school fundraiser — aimed at providing essential school supplies and support services — for students in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Donations will be accepted online until August 11 so local organizations can use the funds to meet critical needs.  WNEP
