CRIME NEWS

  • Governor Shapiro said trooper Perechinsky saved lives when a gunman ambushed two state troopers during a welfare check in Thompson Township and he quickly helped his injured partner while local and New York State Police secured the scene, and the suspect died (both troopers are seriously injured) (the community faces no ongoing threat).  FOX 56
  • A Scranton man, Junior Rashean Jackson, was convicted after a two-day trial for trafficking fentanyl and cocaine from a hotel room — he now faces up to 57 years in prison.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Joseph Melkite Catholic Church is hosting its 24th Annual Lebanese-American Food Festival in Scranton this weekend with foods like potato pancakes, pizza frita, stuffed grape leaves, and baklava to support its fundraiser. The event runs Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. — raffle baskets will also be available.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Treasurer Stacy Garrity returned the Purple Heart and two other military medals to James Morgan on Thursday at Fort Indiantown Gap in observance of Purple Heart Day—medals that had been held in the Treasury’s vault from an unclaimed property report. Morgan said the return was a moving moment for his family.  WNEP
