COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Artists will paint live alpacas and feed them carrots during a Painting with Alpacas event on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Windy Haven Farm in Covington Twp, while Swap Scranton hosts a pop-up market and clothing swap at the Marketplace at Steamtown in Scranton from 12 to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, dragon boat teams will race on the Susquehanna River in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  WVIA
  • Yesterday, Dunmore Health Care Center hosted its first vintage car show where residents and community members enjoyed 1950s and 1960s music, a cookout, raffle baskets donated by community partners, and a showcase of classic cars—money raised will support more community outings for residents.  FOX 56

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out on Burke Street in Dunmore at 3 a.m. Thursday and forced four people to leave their home — they are now staying with family while officials investigate the cause.  WNEP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Public school districts in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania are set to start the 2025-2026 school year with dates from Aug 14th to early September. In Scranton, classes will begin on Aug 27th — each district follows its own schedule.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scranton Counseling Center hosted its inaugural Summer Splash for Mental Health on Thursday, August 14, offering catered barbecue, summer drink tickets, music, shaved ice, games+raffles to help reduce the stigma of therapy. The event aimed to raise funds for the center’s community programs.  FOX 56

  • The Crestwood Comets are set to begin their season and compete for a playoff spot under head coach Ryan Arcangeli after last season's near miss—a District 2 4A semifinal loss to Valley View.   • The Wyoming Valley Challenger League from Luzerne County is going to play in the Little League World Series for the first time and will take the field at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 23 at Volunteer Stadium in Williamsport—having practiced hard in the summer heat to be ready for this debut.  FOX 56
  • At Wednesday’s RailRiders game, executive Jason Saunders delivered a surprise first pitch proposal for his mom Tammy—captured on video as the team beat the Indianapolis Indians 6-5.  FOX 56
