ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A viral video captured a Scranton firefighter rushing to stop a 20-ton engine that was not parked properly over the weekend — Fire Chief John Judge said the mishap occurred as his team responded to a structure fire on Pittston Ave and worked quickly to save the block.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stephen Cognetti, a filmmaker from Lackawanna County, debuts his fifth Hell House film, Hell House LLC: Lineage, in theaters today—showing locally at Cinemark Montage Mountain 20 and XD, Regal Dickson City and Imax, and Cinemark Stroud Mall—and in Canada and Mexico. The 108-minute film was partly shot in Scranton and nearby Northeast Pennsylvania and completes a five-part series with a loyal fanbase.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Forty incoming freshmen and 11 student leaders from the University of Scranton volunteered last week via the FIRST program—assisting local nonprofits such as NeighborWorks Northeastern PA, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center while cleaning a Fourth Street lot scheduled for sale—building ties with their new hometown before classes begin.  WVIA
  • On Tuesday, educators in Scott Township said that the delayed budget leaves over $89,000,000 in expected funds at risk for public schools ahead of the new school year.   • Lackawanna County Commissioner Chris Chermak pushed for a quick fix to the board vacancy after Commissioner Matt McGloin resigned in March. He said operating with only two commissioners slowed business—he asked the State Supreme Court to deny Commissioner Bill Gaughan's petition so a new member could be appointed under the Home Rule Charter.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health insurers offering plans on Pennie propose a 19% premium increase for individuals next year (with small business rates rising by 13%) due to higher health care costs and the expected end of enhanced tax credits. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department will review the proposals and accept public comments until Sept. 2.  WVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Scranton Prep Cavaliers finished a 12-2 season last year and now prepare for a tough schedule that starts with an opener at Valley View. Coach Terry Gallagher said the team must replace star quarterback Louis Paris while players like Anthony De Los Santos and Will McPartland work to win games against Loyola Blakefield, Canisius, Jersey Shore—and North Pocono.  WNEP
