  • Today, Lackawanna County Treatment Court hosted its annual family picnic at McDade Park—bringing together participants, their families, treatment providers, probation officers, and judges for food, games, and connection—and offering a chance to see community members beyond the courtroom.  FOX 56

CRIME NEWS

  • Scranton resident Yoel Weiss, co-owner of Woolworth Mansion, was sentenced on Wednesday to 57 months in prison after he filed seven false COVID-19 relief loan applications that netted $858,000, which he used for personal expenses and property deals — his actions diverted funds meant to help struggling businesses.  WVIA
  • Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Wilkes-Barre at Elite Massage for robbery, indecent exposure, and theft—he is accused of hurting the owner, stealing her cellphone, and fleeing in a white Toyota Camry before Hanover Township Police later found his car on Wednesday.  FOX 56
  • Plains Township Police are asking for help to identify suspects who passed fake money at a Sheetz on State Route 315 in Plains Township — the suspects were seen in a blue Kia sedan with a New Jersey registration.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Festa Italiana will celebrate 49 years of Italian heritage at Courthouse Square in Scranton from August 29 through September 1. Dozens of vendors will offer Italian foods along with live entertainment, a car show, an Italian mass and a 5K race—admission is free.  WNEP

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday afternoon for Bucktown Center — a new four-story senior apartment building with 40 units along East Drinker Street in Dunmore. United Neighborhood Centers opened the building to meet a critical housing need and revitalize the community.  WNEP

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wyoming Valley Challenger Baseball team left for Williamsport on Thursday for the Little League World Series—families had a send-off and enjoyed picnics and pool parties as they prepared for the game. They will play the Challenger Division match on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. as they embrace a milestone in their journey.  WVIA
  • The Wyoming Valley Challenger team of 15 players will play in the Challenger Division Exhibition Game at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with free admission and a live broadcast by WVIA—this game gives the players a chance to fulfill a long-held dream.  WVIA
