COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scranton native Jerome Martin Mullaney, a U.S. Navy Reserve sailor who died in World War II when his ship hit an underwater mine off France, will be laid to rest in his hometown this September. A viewing will be held on September 3 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home — his internment will occur at Saint Mary’s Cemetery with full military honors.  FOX 56
  • Volunteers led by Bill Davis and Lori Schrader are working five days a week to restore Abington Hills Cemetery on Morgan Highway in South Abington Township to its original glory and honor local veterans and loved ones—They have received over 100 thank-you letters and are asking local lawn care companies to help fix potholes, broken gravestones, and dead trees.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Festa Italiana's schedule was revealed for Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton. The festival will run from Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1+ and will offer live music, dance, food vendors, and family fun.  PA Homepage
  • Former Navy SEAL Jeremy M. Komasz took over as superintendent of Steamtown National Historic Site in January and will lead Railfest 2025 from Aug. 29 to 31—an event celebrating the park’s 30th anniversary and the legacy of American railroading. He is checking repairs on closed buildings and planning local partnerships to boost visitor experience.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Schools across northeastern Pennsylvania are gearing up for the 2025-2026 year with start dates ranging from August 21st to September 8th—some districts have already begun while others, including Scranton School District which will start on August 27th, will open later this week.  PA Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Jim Haddock from Luzerne sponsored a bipartisan bill to suspend pay for the governor, lawmakers, and the lieutenant governor if the state budget is not passed, arguing that lawmakers should feel the pain to push action. Indiana County Commissioner Sherene Hess said counties are upset over the delay—especially since kids, seniors and veterans are most affected.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Geisinger pediatrician Dr. Stacey Cummings advises parents to shift kids’ bedtimes 15 minutes earlier each night over two weeks to help them get enough sleep for school—she also recommends a calm routine that limits screen use and helps ease back-to-school worries.  WNEP

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residents of Jermyn Mobile Home Village are anxious after receiving a July 26 letter that the community was sold to Archbald Developer II LLC with a sales agreement signed on May 21 and a planned transfer of ownership on April 15—many worry they may be forced to leave and that future projects like a data center could bring more uncertainty. Families also voice concerns for their pets and the challenges of finding new homes on short notice.  FOX 56
