- ➤ Railfest in Scranton will start Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Steamtown National Historic Site and run through Sunday, offering rides, static exhibits, and demonstrations of historic locomotives—free shuttles will connect the site with La Festa downtown. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Senators Maria Collett, Nick Pisciottano and Vincent Hughes have proposed bills that will require private insurance and Medicaid to cover FDA-approved vaccines recommended by major medical groups. The proposals will remove cost-sharing—aiming to lower healthcare expenses and protect residents from preventable illnesses. PA Homepage
- ➤ On Tuesday, a federal appeals court ruled that Pennsylvania must stop discarding mail ballots for having a wrong handwritten date on the envelope — a decision that follows an earlier ruling in Pittsburgh and shields thousands of votes from being thrown out. The move is supported by groups that filed the lawsuit and may change how ballots are handled in future elections. WNEP
- ➤ At Pennsylvania Medical Solutions in Scranton, a former rag factory owned by Jushi Holdings is now used to grow and test medical marijuana in a controlled setting. Lawmakers like Rep. - ➤ A 1.5-mile stretch of state Route 347, known as Justus Boulevard, in Scott Township will close from September 2 through fall for culvert replacement — 950 vehicles use this road daily. PennDOT said drivers must follow a detour on Interstate 81 from Exit 197 to Exit 199. WNEP
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Six additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus in Lackawanna County, bringing the total to 25 for the season. County coordinator Rocco Genovese said a sample was collected on July 30 near West State Street and James Way in Archbald and five more were confirmed on August 18 at sites in Ed Staback Memorial Park, Taylor and Scranton—residents are urged to remove standing water and wear long sleeves to lower the risk of bites. - ➤ Pediatricians at Geisinger say children should get all required vaccines before school starts to protect against diseases like diphtheria, measles, chicken pox and others. They explained that kindergartners need several shots while seventh graders and seniors must have a tetanus booster and a meningitis vaccine as flu season nears. WNEP
