COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Julia Hockey Mazur's foundation was started by her family to deliver care packages and plastic butterflies to cancer patients in her honor—her effort reflects a promise to care for others following her passing. This Sunday the foundation will host a basket raffle with over 300 baskets and a spaghetti dinner at Colorusso La Palazzo near Scranton—funds raised will support its ongoing mission.  WNEP
  • The NEPA Youth Shelter in Scranton is setting up tables outside its temporary location on Providence Road from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday to offer school supplies and winter jackets to teens while its building is under construction—John Rosengrant, the new executive director, said the shelter will reopen with hot meals, a teen center, and a recording studio in October.  PA Homepage

  • Bailey’s Cafe and Events opened its second Scranton location on Aug. 15 at the former Heaven & Earth Gift Shop on 400 Wyoming Ave after a four-week soft opening that began on July 21—menus fresh from the Dalton location offer baked goods, quiches, salads, and handheld sandwiches with seating for 40 indoors and 25 outdoors while plans for future entertainment are underway.  The Abington Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christine Medley opened her Crow Designs Letterpress Studio in Clarks Summit during the summer Art of the Abingtons Studio Tour after moving equipment from her former Scranton space—she now offers letterpress workshops and will host future sessions at local venues.  The Abington Journal
  • The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple is being restored to its original 1930s look with work on the stone, roof, gutters, and 60% of the leaded glass windows; workers are also cleaning up the tile ceiling and wall art in the theater—closed since June—to get ready for mid-November shows. General Manager John Cardoni said the project will help the center continue to host local performances and cultural events.  PA Homepage

  • Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti (the city’s first female mayor) announced she entered the congressional race in Pennsylvania's 8th District to challenge first-term Congressman Rob Bresnahan while continuing her mayoral reelection bid; she said her run is meant to fight corruption and help hardworking local residents.  FOX 56
