- ➤ Scranton native Jerome Martin Mullaney, who died during the D-Day invasion in WWII nearly 80 years ago, was laid to rest at Saint Mary’s Cemetery after DNA tests confirmed his identity—his final rest marks the return of a local hero. Family members and local officials said his burial, marked by a rosette on the Wall of the Missing, honors his sacrifice for his country. FOX 56

- ➤ Scranton fire crews quickly put out a small fire at the back of an old train station on Lackawanna Avenue — they found items linked to vagrants and reported no injuries or significant damage. PA Homepage
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Diva Productions will present The Judas Sheep at the Olde Brick Theater on Sept. 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sept. 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. thanks to a Lackawanna County grant. Set on Good Friday 1983 in East Texas, the play tells the story of citizens trying to deal with town bully Buck Skidmore — directed by Paige Balitski — and will star Melissa Uchic and David Spitzer. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, dozens of teachers and students protested outside the Weiss Hall dedication at the University of Scranton demanding a fair contract after union members worked without one since August 31st. Faculty Affairs Council Chair Dr. Stacey Muir said union members have been bargaining for six months—seeking progress without success. FOX 56
- ➤ After more than a year of construction, the University of Scranton dedicated Robert S. and Marilyn A. Weiss Hall— a four-story, 90,000 square foot building that houses the Cybercrime department, student health services, and an idea center with equipment from sewing machines to 3D printers. University President Father Joseph Marina said the largest financial gift in the school's history from the Weiss family will benefit students for many years. FOX 56
- ➤ Abington Heights High School is planning its first MINI THON on March 27 at the school gym to raise funds for Four Diamonds that supports children fighting cancer—students and staff are organizing fundraisers, sign postings, and regular meetings to prepare for the event. Teacher Brendan Buck noted that the new club, inspired by student Ella Musgrave and modeled after Penn State’s THON, is open to all qualifying students committed to the cause. The Abington Journal

- ➤ Lackawanna County and Commissioner Bill Gaughan asked the state Supreme Court on Wednesday to block county judges from appointing a replacement for former Commissioner Matt McGloin until the appeal is resolved. The judges will interview three candidates on Thursday and will only select one after the court gives its word. WVIA
- ➤ The Lackawanna County Board of Elections scheduled a special election on November 4 to replace Clerk of Judicial Records Mauri Kelly, who retired on September 2 — the winner will serve until January 2026. WVIA
