COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Scranton Police Department’s K9 unit visited the Lackawanna County Children’s Library where children met Aiden—a two-year-old Belgian Malinois who performed fence jumping, scent detection, and obedience commands. K9 Officer John Cantafio explained that the demonstration showed how police dogs are trained for many roles, including evidence searches and tracking missing persons.  FOX 56

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Three lottery players in Pennsylvania bought winning Powerball tickets with Power Play from the September 6 drawing that each netted $100,000 by matching four white balls and the red Powerball — the winners from retailers in Lackawanna and Allegheny counties will split the $1.787 billion jackpot and choose between an annuity payout or a lump sum.  PA Homepage

FINANCE NEWS

  • In Archbald, a local player won $100,000 on a Powerball ticket with Power Play from the drawing on September 6 — the winning ticket matched four white balls and the red Powerball and would have been worth $50,000 without the extra option. The Archbald Foodmart earned a $500 bonus for the sale while two tickets sold in Missouri and Texas won the jackpot that reset to a $20 million annuity for the next drawing on September 8.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT announced that lane restrictions are in effect in Luzerne, Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties this week—drivers on Interstate 81, Interstate 380, Route 6 and Interstate 80 should plan alternate routes. The restrictions began on Sept. 8 for some roads and will continue through Sept. 19 on others—drivers are advised to check road conditions before traveling.  WVIA

  • Clark Summit attorney Paul Walker wrote a letter to the U.S. Attorney's Office warning that an altered kratom product sold at a local Sunoco gas station may lead to dangerous intoxication and overdose among vulnerable users—he urged an investigation into its growing availability.  FOX 56
  • A new task force in Lackawanna County met for the second time on Monday to plan ways to reduce infant deaths by promoting safe sleep practices—this group is seeking funds to support community education.  PA Homepage
