Good morning, Scranton. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 18th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The developer withdrew plans for three data centers in Blakely Borough ahead of a public meeting—borough officials said local residents signed petitions to keep the development out of residential areas. Community members expressed relief that their united voices had stopped the project.  PA Homepage

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today at Dome Sportsplex in Plains Township, a limited-time Just Between Friends kids pop-up consignment sale is open to the public starting at 9:00 a.m.—organizer Heather Orlandini said more than 158,000 new and gently used items are available at 50—90% off after a presale held on Wednesday.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Lackawanna County commissioners Chris Chermak and Bill Gaughan argued at a public meeting over the county budget and a new property reassessment that many say is error-prone. Chermak called for extending formal appeals by six months to help confused homeowners while Gaughan warned that delaying the new values could lead to legal costs (a court order requires new values to take effect by January 1, 2026).  WVIA
  • Residents in Archbald spoke out against proposed datacenters by handing out "No Data Center" signs and gathering petition signatures before the council meeting on September 17—citing concerns over noise, health, and the environment. The borough council will hold a public zoning hearing on September 29 to decide on the proposed zones.  FOX 56
  • Officials say regionalizing police departments in northeastern Pennsylvania may help small departments get enough staff—studies show nearly 60% of these teams have fewer than 10 officers, and examples such as the one officer in McAdoo raise concerns. Proponents believe strengthening regional forces will improve services for all communities in the region.  PA Homepage

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Misericordia, the No. 4 Lady Cougars begin the season with new, young players after a Sweet 16 exit last year and are set to play reserve matches before upcoming contests against Messiah and Scranton Lady Royals.
