  • Animal Control rescued MJ from a bad situation in Scranton in January, and Friends with Paws Pet Rescue reports she is now healthy, house-trained, and eager for an active home.   • Downtown Scranton’s new shop Pezzi on the Avenue will open on October 3 and brings together local artists and vintage finds in a renovated space that features original floors from the historic Omar Room—an echo of Hotel Jermyn’s past.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Pennsylvania, some volunteers qualify as employees for workers’ compensation if injured during duty—eligible roles include firefighter, paramedic, and emergency responder. They must report any injury to a supervisor within 120 days and seek medical treatment to claim wage loss benefits based on the state’s average weekly wage.  FOX 56
  • A Lackawanna County Judge ordered potential independent candidate Ryan Runco to respond to a petition challenging his nominating petitions by Tuesday, Sept. 23—he is scheduled for a hearing on Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. Runco must reply amid plans for a special election to fill the commissioner seat left vacant after Matt McGloin resigned in February.  FOX 56

  • Anna Lytvyn has been struggling to buy a house for a year and got hope when Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell cut the benchmark rate on Wednesday from 4.25 to 4.5 percent to 4 to 4.25 percent—a change that could lower monthly mortgage payments. Realtors say the lower rate may open the housing market for buyers and help families afford their dream home.  FOX 56
