COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania is urgently seeking disaster volunteers as its events have nearly doubled compared to a decade ago—longtime volunteers Jane and John Hoopingarner share their stories to inspire more helpers.  PA Homepage
  • St. Cats and Dogs at the Nay Aug Zoo announced that Crazy Paws—known as The Mayor of Nay Aug—died earlier this week and was a much-loved cat roaming Joanne Davis' home and local park. The 15-year-old cat reminded many of the need to spay and neuter outdoor cats and will be greatly missed by residents.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Scranton Fringe Festival Launch Party starts at Marywood University from 6 to 9 p.m., showcasing local art and performances. Residents can also visit the free WVIA Open House at 100 WVIA Way from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Festival of Wood at Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—with a special 11 a.m. ceremony to mark the Big Pocono Fire Tower restoration.  WVIA
  • Earth Conservancy is asking artists to design the cover of a native plant seed packet that will soon replace pens at conferences and educational events. The nonprofit hopes the new design will help pollinators and spur native plant growth in the region—giving local creatives a fresh chance to contribute.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti is running for re-election as mayor today and has also announced a bid for the 8th Congressional District seat, which some political analysts say may split her focus. Supporters praise her for being open about her ambitions (even as critics warn she may not fully serve local needs), leaving voters with a challenging decision.  WVIA
  • Reinforcements arrived in Archbald before 10 a.m. Tuesday to begin building the Archbald Borough Veterans Monument Park that will honor local veterans from Archbald and Lackawanna County. The park includes pieces like the Vulcan—used until Desert Storm—and an armored vehicle with an anti-aircraft gun and an M60 Patton tank, with more monuments planned before the park opens by summer.  WNEP

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Health advised Pennsylvanians to follow vaccine guidance from groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists rather than the CDC advisory committee after it changed vaccine protocols—Gov. Josh Shapiro said vaccines save lives and insurers would continue covering the same immunizations as before.  WNEP
  • Scranton native Scott Hetsko marks ten years since his life-saving heart transplant and now works as a meteorologist while urging organ donation—he cares for his heart by staying active and playing pickleball in honor of donor Shawn McMullen.  FOX 56
