COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Shavertown Volunteer Fire Department teamed up with Hometown Heroes Food Truck for a week-long fundraiser that runs from September 29 to October 4, offering sandwiches and sides for donations to help buy new equipment for local firefighters — all funds will support essential upgrades and training.  FOX 56
  • The SPCA of Luzerne County bought the former Dundee Gardens property at 2407 Sans Souci Parkway in Hanover to expand its shelter and improve animal care. Executive director Todd Hevner said the new building—designed for greater efficiency—will let the facility care for more animals until they are adopted.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lackawanna County School District teams up with CEO Weinberg Food Bank for its Third Annual Children’s Produce Market to provide food boxes for over 200 families—Mid Valley School District football players volunteered on Monday to pack the boxes. The school will hold its next produce market on October 27 and anyone interested can sign up for more details.  PA Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Archbald Borough leaders proposed zoning changes to allow data centers while a packed public hearing let residents voice concerns—citing issues like pollution and noise; a special council meeting will be held on Friday to decide on the ordinance.  FOX 56
  • Clifton Township supervisors voted not to move forward with a settlement after 1778 Ridge Pike LLC challenged the zoning law for a data center project on a 500-acre site near Route 380. Residents at the Gouldsboro Fire Department meeting raised concerns about health—safety and environmental risks, and a zoning board meeting will be held tomorrow night.  FOX 56
  • Four judges will meet at the WVIA Studio in Pittston on Oct 6 to talk about judicial independence — they will explain its role in our legal system and answer public questions while Tracey Matisak moderates the panel with free tickets available. The discussion will air on WVIA-TV on Nov 6 at 7 p.m.  WVIA
  • A state appeals court ruled Friday that a special election to replace ex-Lackawanna County Commissioner—Matt McGloin will take place on Nov. 4. McGloin resigned seven months ago; the county is still seeking a new commissioner.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frances Slocum State Park has been chosen for the Recovery in Nature initiative that helps Pennsylvanians in recovery use state parks during National Recovery Month—providing a calming walk on trails like Lake Shore Trail. Joe Mattioli, board vice president for Northbound and Co., said the program partners with state agencies to support those living with substance use disorder.  WVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Munley Law has partnered with Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon—an athlete who recovered from two ACL injuries—to help him profit from his name, image and likeness under NCAA rules. The law firm said the deal will protect young athletes from unfair offers and support their sports careers.  FOX 56
  • District officials postponed the Lackawanna Trail varsity football game against Old Forge on Friday due to safety concerns and will reschedule it for Sunday at 1 p.m.—extra security and a homecoming court introduction will feature at halftime.  FOX 56
