COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friends of the Poor and the Catherine McAuley Center are joining forces to help families that lack safe housing and food — a move that meets growing community needs. They announced the 49th annual Thanksgiving week event will be held on November 25 at the Scranton Cultural Center.  PA Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Quinnipiac poll shows that Governor Josh Shapiro leads Pennsylvania’s 2026 governor race at about 55% while potential challengers Stacy Garrity and Doug Mastriano trail at 39%—73% of voters say they have not heard enough about Garrity.  PA Homepage
  • The federal government remains shut down because lawmakers have not passed a funding bill, leaving about 10,000 local federal workers in limbo—essential services like Social Security continue while programs such as national parks face cuts. Congressman Rob Bresnahan said the shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m., could cost $400 million daily and urged affected workers to contact his office.  FOX 56
  • Clifton Twp. held its third hearing on the data center zoning ordinance challenge today as experts, lawyers and residents discussed building height and noise rules for Project Gold—a proposal by 1778 Rich Pike LLC for a campus with up to 30 data center buildings; the hearing will resume on Oct 29 at 7 p.m. with a possible follow-up on Nov 19 at 7 p.m. if needed.  WVIA
  • Residents in Archbald raised concerns at Monday’s public hearing over a proposed zoning amendment that may allow data centers near schools and homes. A special council meeting is set for Friday to review guardrails for the centers—comments echoed calls for stricter zoning in Jessup and Blakelee—ensuring local oversight before any work begins.  FOX 56

  • 28/22 Sports Night airs Monday-Friday from 8-9 p.m. and covers the Philadelphia Eagles versus Broncos game, playoff baseball talks, and analysis of the Yankees and Phillies. The show is hosted by Nick Zelaya and Alaina Losito plus produced and co-hosted by Ricky Turner, featuring local high school and college athletes discussing upcoming seasons.  PA Homepage
  • In Pittston, teams from around the country competed in a sled hockey tournament where players with lower body disabilities used sleds and hockey sticks to move on ice — the event gave them a chance to compete as a team. Dan McDevitt, who lost his legs as a child, said the tournament helped him feel strong and part of the team.  FOX 56
  • Kendel Jones, a senior runner from Elk Lake, aims to win his fourth district gold medal this season after his team improved their record to 17-0 in a meet on Tuesday; his coach Will Squire praised his family's strong running tradition on the farm — his next meet is set for Tuesday, October 7th at Blue Ridge High School.  WNEP
