CULTURE NEWS

  • Madame Jenny's in Scranton has reopened after nearly six years and now offers a season of cabaret shows including Halloween burlesque, live music and holiday events until New Year's Eve. Settlers Hospitality held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to mark the reopening — it now manages the venue.  FOX 56
  • This weekend, the Susquehanna County Heritage Trail lets people visit 15 old sites—such as a 200-year-old church, a school, and a cider mill—in Montrose, New Milford, and Harford. Other events include the Brewsterhout Rooftop Party in Wilkes-Barre to support the Osterhout Free Library and the Pickle Me Poconos festival in East Stroudsburg—featuring pickle games and live music.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scranton School District has cut enrichment programs and paused teacher development as state and federal funds remain blocked after 94 days of budget gridlock; district leaders warn that with only ten weeks of cash reserves left, students may lose essential services. Officials emphasize that without swift action from lawmakers, further cuts could force the district to limit additional programs—making it critical to restore funding promptly—so that learning opportunities for students are preserved.  FOX 56
  • Former Army veteran Earl Granville spoke at Wyoming Seminary, sharing his story of overseas service, recovery from a roadside bomb injury, and how he learned to overcome hardship — inspiring both upper and lower school students. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lackawanna County will host tire-recycling collections in October to cut down on mosquito breeding that spreads West Nile virus, with events scheduled at various sites including Scranton’s Montage Pavilion on October 18 — fees are $3 for a clean tire, $5 for a dirty tire, and $10 for a tire with its rim.  FOX 56

  • The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders announced that Shawn Reilly is the new President and General Manager as he brings 36 years of baseball experience—he plans to build on team traditions and strengthen community ties while former GM Katie Beekman moves to Vice President of Operations.  FOX 56
  • The top-seeded Crestwood Comets in the Wyoming Valley Conference have beaten Warwick and Northwestern Lehigh and now prepare for a noon road game at Easton Area—coach Amanda Tredinnick said the team, led by nine seniors and several players headed to Division I, will compete in the District II Subregional Championship on Oct 20. This push for a conference title comes as the team builds its momentum for a strong state tournament run.  WNEP
  • Crews are reinforcing the Heritage Valley Crossing pedestrian bridge—using temporary repairs to secure the cross members—to keep it open for over 1,000 participants in the upcoming Steamtown Marathon, and officials expect the structure to reopen next week.  WNEP
  • The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders named owner Shawn Reilly as the new president and general manager after a management shuffle yesterday, and he said he will work to build on a 36-year legacy for the team. Longtime manager Katie Beekman will now serve as vice president of operations with a focus on PNC Field—helping the club strengthen community ties.  WVIA
