COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leadership Lackawanna announced its 2025—26 Core Program class that will engage a diverse group of local professionals in an immersive 10‑month leadership development course aimed at addressing community challenges. The program will include interactive sessions and community service projects to expand networks and build essential skills.  The Abington Journal
  • Gia Tugend is the new executive director at the Waverly Community House and plans to expand programs and upgrade its 100 year old facility—she began as an intern in 2012 and will enhance services for seniors, veterans, and children.  The Abington Journal
  • 20-year-old Eddie Kauffman, a dedicated athlete at Roanoke College, died peacefully this morning at CHOP in Philadelphia after a long fight with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His father said Eddie passed away—thanking the community for strong support through Team Eddie K.  FOX 56

  • Coffee shop owners in our area face rising costs as record-high coffee prices and new tariffs push up expenses. Mary Tellie of Electric City Roasting Co—the company she founded 22 years ago—says extra costs from tariffs and poor harvests will force shops to raise prices soon.  WVIA
  • A Lackawanna County woman won a $5,000 home makeover shopping spree from Boscov’s on Tuesday in Newton Township—she was chosen from nearly 4,000 entrants and received a visit from CEO Jim Boscov while shopping for items like a mattress, sofa, and vacuum. CULTURE NEWS

  • Reaper’s Revenge at 60 Green Grove Road in Scott Township has been scaring visitors with haunted hayrides, a Lost Carnival and a 3D walk-through called Delirium since its opening on Sept. 20th and is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until November - the venue also offers a family-friendly ride named Lil’ Grim with modified experiences and food options.  The Abington Journal

  • At Abington Heights, band director Michael Lesnesky leads grades six to twelve in marching, concert, and jazz bands—students take on roles that build leadership and teamwork while playing at school and community events.  The Abington Journal

  • After the loss of a seven-year-old non-verbal autistic child last weekend, lawmakers and local advocates are proposing Aiden’s Law to create Purple Alerts that quickly inform the public when children in danger go missing.
