  • Griffin Pond Animal Shelter rescued Chiquita, a young Rottweiler mix found as a stray who shows anxiety and clinginess in the shelter. Rescue workers say she loves to cuddle, learns quickly, and would do best in an active home with space to ease her fear of cars—potential adopters are urged to give her a forever home.  WNEP

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Friday a fire broke out in Scranton that made one home unlivable and forced nine adults + nine children from their homes while fire crews responded quickly, the Red Cross provided help, and no one was injured, with neighbors relieved the fire did not reach nearby houses.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michelle Yelland, a Luzerne County resident who worked at Kistler Elementary for 12 years, wrote her book 'The Art of Living, The Joy Fighting ALS' after doctors told her she had ALS in February 2024—she hopes the book will help people learn about the disease and bring hope to others.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal shutdown continues to impact thousands in Pennsylvania, and public as well as private groups are offering aid, including financial relief, food and utility support, for furloughed employees through resources like PA 211—banks and utilities are also easing fees and deferring payments for those in need. Additional measures include unemployment help for eligible workers and local food distribution for affected households.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Russ Keeler will run the Steamtown Marathon on Sunday morning wearing 50 bras — he aims to set a Guinness World Record if he finishes in under six hours. He will donate $1,500 to Think Pink Mountain Top for cancer care and send any extra bras to Pink Smile Promise.  WVIA
  • The Savannah Bananas announced on Thursday that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will host two Banana Ball games at PNC Field on May 22 and May 23, with the Loco Beach Coconuts playing the Firefighters. Fans must enter a ticket lottery by October 31 to purchase $35 tickets via Fans First Entertainment—ensuring a fast-paced baseball and entertainment show.  FOX 56
  • Fox56 sports director Bob Ide previewed Friday night's Pittston Area vs. Hazleton Area football game and discussed Penn State's upset loss to UCLA last Saturday — he also looked ahead to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins season opening happening later this weekend.  WVIA
