COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers in Clarks Summit are selling pumpkins to raise funds for a mission trip to central Appalachia where teams will repair homes and build wheelchair ramps. The fundraiser runs Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through October 31—organizers aim to raise $5000 per team.  PA Homepage
  • Luzerne County's Weinberg Food Bank in Jenkins Township has reduced food supplies for more than 300 pantries—facing rising demand and empty shelves amid a four-month state budget impasse—and local donations have slowed. Governor Shapiro urged the state senate to act as food bank staff struggle to meet the growing need in the community.  PA Homepage

  • Pennsylvania trivia details state symbols that show the commonwealth's heritage and natural beauty with examples like the Eastern Hellbender and Brig Niagara. The guide also lists symbols such as milk, white-tailed deer, Great Dane, mountain laurel, trilobite, Ruffed Grouse, fireflies, Brook Trout, and Eastern Hemlock (each chosen to mark aspects of history and conservation).  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Scranton and its 290-member faculty union remain far apart in new contract talks after the agreement expired on September 1, with union leader Stacey Muir saying a 2.25% pay raise does not keep pace with rising costs. The university cited fiscal challenges and defended its offer as faculty continue working under minimal compliance—spurring ongoing disputes over pay and benefits.  WVIA
  • The GAR Museum in Scranton held its first Civil War seminar at The Marketplace at Steamtown on Monday evening with guest speaker Tim Pierce from Gettysburg National Military Park — he shared local stories about Pennsylvania Reserve soldiers from Luzerne and Lackawanna; the museum will host more talks with experts to preserve the region's war history.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Penn State’s Board of Trustees voted Monday to let Philadelphia-based WHYY take over WPSU’s radio and TV operations so the station can serve Central Pennsylvania without a $17 million subsidy. WHYY will have 30 days to secure $8.36 million in funding and the deal still needs approval from WHYY’s board and the FCC.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Army veteran Sgt. First Class Paul Welby is battling esophageal cancer—he says his exposure to burn pits during deployment led to his diagnosis. His family and neighbors will host a community fundraiser at VFW Post 25 in Scranton on Sunday, October 19th, from noon to 6 to help cover future costs and raise awareness.  FOX 56

  • Football coach James Franklin was fired from Penn State after earning 104 wins, and students at Penn State Scranton shared mixed opinions about his departure—some say he rebuilt the team while others feel he should have left sooner.   • Russ Keeler, who tried to break a world record by running the Steamtown Marathon in 50 bras, pulled out after about three miles because of breathing issues—he competed on Sunday and is now raising funds for Think Pink Mountain Top to help women with cancer care.  WVIA
